After many concerts, tours, and years of collaboration, the individual musicians of hand werk have not only shaped the ensemble with their skills, personalities, and ideas—they, too, have been shaped by hand werk as artistic personalities. This evening is designed to reflect that reality. It is an experiment unlike any we’ve attempted before: each hand werk member will compose a piece for the evening. Instead of curating, the members of hand werk will create the music themselves in this concert. The focus will not be on solo pieces for their own instruments, but on compositions for the ensemble or sections of the group. The outcome is open-ended, especially since not all members would describe themselves as composers. Inspiration will come from the repertoire performed to date and the experiences of previous concerts and tours. The diverse backgrounds and areas of interest among the ensemble members promise a varied evening full of surprises and will put hand werk to the test, as the collective reveals its most deeply personal artistic side.
