HW25C_#1 FREI & FREI_ Zen mit Darius Heid
concert series by hand werk
February_21_2025_8pm_Alte Feuerwache (Melchiorstraße 3, 50670 Cologne)
This concert evening focuses on Zen Buddhism and spirituality. Instrumental improvisation
meets notated chamber music.
Darius Heid, Cologne-based pianist and composer in the genre of “modern creative” and himself an active Zen practitioner, is creating this experiment together with hand werk. Heid's work is influenced by his meditations: his inner peace and self-awareness can be heard in his art. Turned in on himself, he gradually extracts sounds from this inner space.
The notated compositions also revolve around aspects of spirituality: in “four readers”, Helena Canovas performatively stages the conscious process of reading, in Morton Feldman's “Why Patterns”, the composed silence becomes clear and in “Selig Licht”, Saad Haddad skillfully peels unheard harmonies like shadow chords from Bach's same-named chorale.
